Hallmark
Hallmarking ensures that items described as containing precious metals meet legal standards of purity. It is a legal requirement to assay metals over a certain weight, but I like to have items under this weight assayed as a guarantee to my clients. Enabling them to buy with confidence.
A hallmark consists of a series of small stamps. The one on the left is the makers mark. I'm registered as LR in two lozenge shapes. The next is the fineness mark of the metal, eg 925 for sterling silver, followed by the lion passant to indicate sterling silver in Scotland. The forth part is a castle, which is the official assay office mark for Edinburgh. And finally there's an initial which indicates the date.
